BOOK CLUB: JANUARY PICKS

Updated: Apr 16, 2020

This month it's all about delving into new genres, comforting tales, and a good old story to get stuck into during these winter months.

DOLLY ALDERTON - EVERYTHING I KNOW ABOUT LOVE

It feels like every woman and their dog has read this book, but if you haven’t then read it and if you have, read it again.

Dolly Aldteron’s memoir reads like a recap of the life of any girl growing up in the noughties. She begins with chapter on MSN messenger and if that doesn’t have you hooked and thinking ‘OMG THIS IS BOOK IS ABOUT ME’, then you’re probably a lost cause. Her book of dating disasters, friendship and hilarious anecdotes is the ultimate in new era biographies. It left me nostalgic, warm and fuzzy inside with a desire to be Dolly’s BFF.

Read it ASAP, you won’t regret it.

SARAH PINBOROUGH - BEHIND HER EYES

This is one to read in the daytime and not in the dark.

Behind Her Eyes centres around the life of single mum, Louise, who embarks on a risky relationship with her boss and ends up becoming BFFs with his wife. As Louise gets closer to them both she discovers all is not what it seems. Trust me, the ending will blow your mind.

By far, one of (if not THE best) thriller I’ve ever read. I could not put it down, it had me hooked completely. I cannot recommend it enough, though the ending terrified me and that’s no mean feat. You’ve been warned… .

MARGARET ATWOOD - THE TESTAMENTS

I imagine following on from a novel you wrote years ago would be pretty difficult, but Atwood made it seamless. The Testaments is the sequel to the incredible The Handmaid’s Tale and it did not disappoint. It doesn’t pick up where the prequel finished and at first it took me a while to get used it, but soon I was hooked and actually enjoyed that it doesn’t reference too much of the previous.

It follows three different women and as the novel goes on their own personal stories become intertwined providing more explanation to some of the questions The Handmaid’s Tale leaves you with. As a women, it’s difficult to read some of things that happen to the characters despite it being fiction. It was a brilliant read, definitely lived up to the expectations and hype!

ANGIE THOMAS - THE HATE U GIVE

Honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read. I know everyone says this and this book has received a lot of attention but it’s totally justified.

When Starr is the only witness to the murder of her friend by a police officer, her world is turned upside down. Torn between her loyalty to her black community and the life she leads in a white high school she has to make some heavy decisions a teenager shouldn’t have to. Given the current climate of the world, this story is totally real and sadly probably very relatable in the USA. It’s brilliantly written; I literally read it in about 5 days. Get this one on your reading list ASAP
