WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING

Updated: Jun 2, 2019

Welcome to wedding season. Much like Christmas or Easter, this annual season has swung back around again, and this year dressing for it is like a child in a dressing up box. Gone are the days where only a fascinator and pencil dress were accepted, now wedding guest dressing has almost as much attention as the bride herself. If you're looking to upstage the bride (subtly, of course), then read on...

SLIP DRESSING

It's as if slip dressing knew we had a wedding to go to. They're the ultimate wedding guest hero and thanks to them really making waves these past few seasons, we've got them in a variety of colours and patterns. As luck would have it, they're also perfect for all weather climates, meaning they are a go to for hot weddings abroad and still look chic with a cover up on colder days. Dresses are the obvious easy go-to, but pair skirts with silky camis, floaty blouses or buttoned cardigans.

SUITING & CO-ORDS

Once reserved only for the groomsmen, suits are infiltrating the female wedding guest attire, and quite rightly too. Stock to block colour over anything printed- less is more. Hotter weddings can get away with chic short suits, but the classic trouser suit never goes out of style. Worn with nothing underneath (where possible- keep it classy), suits are a great alternative to the humble dress.

Similarly, you can't go wrong with a co-ord. The outfit is ready made for you and this is where you can experiment with prints and patterns. Co-ords also allow for a little midriff to be shown as the matchy-matchyness detracts attention from looking too inappropriate. Pyjama styles look mega chic and let's face it, uber comfy too...

DRESSES & JUMPSUITS

What is a wedding guest if she hasn't considered the classic dress or jumpsuit for her outfit? It's never going to go out of style and this season they're in a league of their own. Florals and prints are a classic to stand out with and always add a little something extra against a block colour. However, brights and pastels are not to be fooled with and dress shapes this Spring/Summer have been so interesting it's better to let them do the talking. Always opt for a midi or maxi length to keep it classy and demure.

Jumpsuits aren't the easy to manage once you've had a few wedding tipples and need the bathroom, but they're so elegant and super flattering, playsuits look best in weddings overseas, but otherwise keep to trousers.

FINISHING TOUCHES

If anything, accessorising is the best part of getting dressed. You can't get away from strappy sandals this SS19, so it seems only right they're the only shoe to adorn your feet come wedding season. Branching out in numerous colours, there is one to suit every look and instantly add that 'wow' factor to any item.

Team those with a hair accessory, be it pearl clips or a headband, and you've nailed it. As previously mentioned (here), they're an instant outfit updater, giving you that cool- Instagram- french- girl vibe. Best served with slip dressing.

And of course, bags are simply must have. Beaded and detailed bags are a winner for block colour outfits, whilst pearl bags add a feminine edge to suiting. Clutch bags are still the preferred choice, but this season handles are a great go to. Handy to slip over your wrist when the champagne gets flowing!
